2018 Weekly Devotional - Week 3

Week 3
Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

There is a fantastic general store in Goldthwaite, Texas that has everything a man could want. I mean they have building supplies, cast iron cookware, boots, clothes, trapping supplies, knives, guns and ammo, and flashlights. That’s right I said flashlights. In case you haven’t noticed, flashlight technology has exploded in recent years. When I was a kid if you had a yellow Ray-O-Vac powered 9 volt for ‘coon huntin’ you were well off. It could throw a fantastically dim yellow beam all of about 20 yards. So I was in the Mills County General Store the other day and bought a flashlight that uses two AA batteries and can adjust from very dim for up close work, to extremely bright. In fact, you can illuminate the top of a tree over 300 yards away. Coons do not have much of a chance with that kind of technology.
Our Bible passage says God’s word is a lamp unto our feet. The word of God lights up our steps. It shows us where we are going step by step and gives us enough light to accomplish what God has for us in the moment. But God’s word also can burn, spiritually speaking, at a lumen output that no man made technology can touch. The word of God can illuminate the mind. It can shine into the dark recesses of the human heart and effect change. It can even shine down the long corridors of time and tell us things yet to be. Let me encourage you on this spiritual journey to be found in God’s word. It is essential. God may sovereignly turn down the light of his word in order for you to have to trust him step by step or he may show you “great and mighty things that you do not know”. In either case, God’s word will light the way we should go.

In Christ,

John
