2018 Weekly Devotional - Week 10

Week 10

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

In August of 2010 Darla and I were attending our daughter Kristen’s graduation from Texas A&M. Since Darla and I were both Aggies it was an especially proud moment. Near the end of the ceremony about a dozen men and a few women stepped forward and removed their graduation gowns to reveal that they were in uniform. These were members of the Corps of Cadets and they were about to be commissioned as officers in the military. They stated “I, (name), having been appointed a (rank) in the United States (branch of service), do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me God.” What followed was an amazing experience. The entire audience spontaneously stood and began cheering and applauding. This lasted for approximately three minutes uninterrupted!

Our passage of scripture today is called The Great Commission. It is our commissioning service. The One with all authority, the God of angel armies, has granted cosmic authority to Jesus who has commissioned us to fight in and for his kingdom. When we take up our oath of allegiance to King Jesus we enter into his service. And like those men and women at Kristen’s graduation a great cloud of witnesses who are watching to see if we will “bear true faith and allegiance” surrounds us.

In Christ,
